And finally reached Platform 7.
Just in time to see the train pulling away.
For a second, my mind refused to understand what I was seeing.
Then I spotted Mom through one of the windows.
She was waving at me.
Smiling.
I raised my arm, desperately trying to signal that I was still outside.
But she didn’t look frightened.
She looked entertained.
Dad appeared beside her.
He leaned toward the window and shouted loudly enough for me to hear:
“LET’S SEE IF THAT USELESS LITTLE BOY CAN SURVIVE ON HIS OWN!”
Claire pressed her face close to the glass.
She was laughing so hard that she could barely stand upright.
I watched them.
Waiting for the laughter to stop.
Waiting for someone to realize this wasn’t funny.
Waiting for Mom to look worried or Dad to signal that they’d get off at the next station.
But none of that happened.
